Ammo Sales 2012, Rumors of Obama and Feds, And the Ammo Tax at Houston Gun Blog and Houston CHL Classes

I have not personally seen official documents in print or online yet to back up the claim I was emailed this morning, but lets just say my source is at one of the largest, oldest, firearms and shooting accessory distributors in the United States.

The email was short, and simple.

Just a note to let everyone know there will be substantial price increases on most ammo, 9mm could go as high as 3 dollars more per box . This will take place May 1 , 2012. The Manufactures are raisng prices , not us .

Thank you .

I have read several rumors about President Obama raising the tax on ammunition, and apparently so has everyone else. Another rumor I hear often here in the gun shop, is that the Federal Government is buying up all the surplus ammo, and ordering dealers to cease sales (Has not happened here, or any other shops that I know of.)

As firearms have risen to the highest number of sales in history this year, ammo sales have risen exponentially. For every firearm that is sold, several hundreds of rounds of ammunition is also sold, and with the increased rumors of taxing ammo, some are stocking up.

FBI background checks on gun buyers — a key barometer of civilian firearm and ammunition sales — have grown dramatically since 2008. So have federal excise tax collections on guns and ammo, up 45 percent from 2008 to 2009, according to the Treasury Department.

Background checks through the end of February rose 12 percent from last year, according to figures from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Election years are typically years that drive some level of demand.

I spoke to one customer this morning, at Houston Gun Forum Firearm Shop and Houston CHL Class who says “The media is not helping the situation. It seems like every day a new article is coming out, almost warning the consumer that time is running out for us to get this stuff while we can.”.  He also said “The president has already signed several bills that have not necessarily had the approval of Congress, and the majority of Americans would not put it past him to sign this ammo tax.”
Time will tell if the email is correct. We will be revisiting this post on May 1, 2012.
