Ever wonder why dealers like myself will not take in FFL transfers by mail from individuals?
This is why.
Today an ad went up on texasguntrader.com for a “FN 57″ FN Fiveseven Pistol. The asking price? $750. Sound too good to be true? It is.
I replied to the ad, so I could get my $750 FN Fiveseven.
The guy immediately sends me a name, account number, and routing number for a Bank of America account. This is a huge red flag. Why? Because you are NEVER supposed to give out your account number!!!
So naturally, I call Bank of America, just to make sure, and of course, the account number does not exist in the system, and neither does the sellers name.
So at this point, the scam begins. It can go one of several ways (this is considering you did not already notice the FAKE ID, and you did not call and verify the account like i did):
You might tell the seller you will not do a wire transfer because most banks charge $30 for this service (more than just getting a money order). So at this point you offer to mail a check. Well guess what? The address on the fake license goes to a vacant house that is currently on the rental market. That means the criminal can roll by a few days later and grab your money order at cash it at the nearest gas station. Heck he might have enough to go buy himself a nice new gun!
You also might decide to go ahead with the wire transfer, only to find out that the transfer will not go through. When you email the seller to let him know, he will probably advise you that his bank needs your account info first before they will authorize the wire transfer. Suprise! You just gave up your account info!
These criminals do this on a very large and expansive level, and operate on many different blogs, forums, classifieds, and auction websites. Be very cautious when buying and selling anything online! Using a licensed dealer to perform a background check or FFL transfer might seem like a drag, but honestly its a great way to CYA!
This particular idiot had not one but 4 expensive guns for sale, and even has a GOLD ACCOUNT (trusted seller!). I am far from the average gun buyer, and I have many resources and also experience in skip tracing. So me finding out this was a fraud and getting to the point I got to here within 10 minutes is not the norm. I can only imagine how many people have sent this guy a check for one of the four guns he is offering for sale.
I suppose this would be a great time to mention we do FFL transfers in Houston for only $10 w/CHL ! This may not need to be said, but we do not accept any firearms via mail from individuals.
